Apple Computers has just announced the release of the first PowerPC making use of the PowerPC 604 processing chip. The Power Mac 9500 will be the first Apple computer to make use of this chip which can operate at speeds significantly higher than that of current Power PC's utilizing the Power PC 601 chip.
Combining a new Power Macintosh architecture with the next-generation,
PowerPC 604 processor, the Power Mac 9500 provides customers with up to two
times the performance and over three times the memory expansion of Apple's
previous top of the line model. Targeted to professional users in
publishing, technical and media authoring markets, the Power Macintosh 9500
is the first personal computer from Apple to feature the industry-standard
Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus. The move to a high-speed PCI
bus provides Power Mac 9500 customers with significant performance gains and
greater access to customized personal computing solutions via low cost PCI
cards.

The release of the Power Mac 9500 ensures that Macintosh-based systems will continue to remain highly competitive with even the fastest Pentium-based models. It will also incorporate use of PCI expansion slots, increasingly the industry standard in the PC world. If all goes as planned, soon Mac users will be able to use these PCI slots to insert expansion cards that will work on PC's as well as Macintosh systems.

Homer is definitely the larger of the two, but is easier to use and much more graphically enjoyable. IRCle is smaller and somewhat quicker. Take your pick. Death in the Family
John Vincent Atanasoff, inventor of the first digital computer, passed away June 20th, 1995. He played a vital role in the development of computer technology and had a long history of developing technology in universities and government departments in the United States. He was 91.
